There is evidence that suggests that the Mellington Estate has been occupied for over 1000 years with the discovery of Bronze Age and Roman remains nearby. Offa’s Dyke runs close to the Hotel. This was built by Offa, King of Mercia, to keep out the marauding Welsh. The earthwork is still easily recognised running parallel to the main driveway. In the Doomsday book, Mellington (spelt Millington) is recorded as a moated Saxon house with a nearby watermill serving the estate and surrounding area. The present Hall was built in the Gothic revivalist style; highly fashionable amongst the Victorian elite, and the grounds were laid out by Joseph Paxton, of Chatsworth and Crystal Palace fame. The crest above the entrance belongs to the Heap family, owners of the hall from 1903 to 1957.
