It is believed that the Mellington Estate - now the site of Mellington Hall luxury hotel in mid Wales, has been occupied for over 1000 years, the evidence for this being the discovery of Bronze Age and Roman remains nearby. Offa's Dyke runs close to the Hotel. This was built by Offa, King of Mercia, to keep out the marauding Welsh. The earthwork is still easily recognised running parallel to the main driveway. In the Doomsday book, Mellington (spelt Millington) is recorded as a moated Saxon house with a nearby watermill serving the estate and surrounding area.
The present hall was built in the Gothic revivalist style; highly fashionable amongst the Victorian elite, and the grounds were laid out by Joseph Paxton, of Chatsworth and Crystal Palace fame.
The crest above the entrance belongs to the Heap family, owners of Mellington Hall from 1903 to 1957. The motto translates as 'Peace and Harmony', an appropriate testimony to the lifestyle enjoyed today by guests at Mellington Hall luxury hotel in mid Wales.
